G'Day!

G'day and welcome to the land down under! You're in for an absolute treat. Australia is a country that'll surprise you at every turn – from bustling cities with world-class coffee culture to ancient landscapes that seem like they're from another planet.

A Land of Ancient Heritage

You're visiting the home of the world's longest continuous civilisation. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have called this continent home for over 65,000 years, maintaining an unbroken connection to country that spans countless generations. Their rich cultural traditions, Dreamtime stories, and deep understanding of the land continue to thrive today. Take time to learn about this incredible heritage – visit cultural centres, or explore rock art sites that are tens of thousands of years old, and find ways to connect with country. It's a profound reminder that this land has been lovingly cared for and celebrated for millennia before European settlement, and adds remarkable depth to your Australian experience. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Studies (AIATSIS) is a great place to start learning more.

Getting Around

Don't worry about the size of the place – most visitors stick to the eastern coast where the major cities are surprisingly close together. Sydney to Melbourne is just over an hour by plane, and our domestic flight network makes island-hopping and city-hopping a breeze. Just outside of the international terminal in Sydney you can hop onto a Murrays bus which will get you to the centre of Canberra in three hours - but you need to book! In the cities, public transport is reliable and straightforward. Just remember to tap on and off!

The People

Aussies are genuinely friendly bunch who love a good chat. Don't be surprised if strangers strike up conversations – it's just how we are. We're pretty laid-back about most things, and "no worries" really is our national motto. If you're lost or need directions, just ask – most people will bend over backwards to help.

Weather & What to Pack

Remember, our seasons are flipped! December to February is summer (hot!), while June to August is winter. The weather can change quickly, especially in Melbourne where locals joke about "four seasons in one day." Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen (seriously, our sun is strong), and a hat. And yes, everything really can kill you here, but you're far more likely to be charmed by a curious kangaroo than threatened by anything dangerous.

Food & Drink

Forget what you think you know about Australian food – our multicultural cities offer incredible cuisines from every corner of the world. Try a proper flat white coffee, grab some fresh seafood, and yes, Vegemite is an acquired taste (start small!). Our wine regions are world-renowned, and craft beer culture is thriving.

Must-Do Experiences

Beyond the obvious tourist spots, take time to experience an Aussie pub, catch a game of footy (either AFL or rugby), visit a local market, and if possible, get out to see the stars – our night skies are spectacular, especially away from the cities.

Most importantly, take your time and soak it all in. Australia rewards the curious traveler, so don't be afraid to take that scenic detour or chat with locals about their favourite hidden spots. You're going to love it here!

Safe travels, and enjoy every moment of your Australian adventure!
