A note on our website design

Australia is home to around 800 bird species, with roughly 45% of these species being found nowhere else on Earth. The isolation that began when Australia separated from Gondwana about 100 million years ago allowed birds to evolve along completely different pathways from those elsewhere.

Each State and Territory has its own bird, floral and faunal emblem (and sometime also have fish!). Find the full list of symbols here.

The territory bird of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) which is where Canberra is based, is the Gang Gang Cockatoo.

We took the common grey, red and pink colours of the Gang Gang cockatoo as inspiration for our website and added Federal blue.

Read more about the Gang Gang here.

We also use the Waratah, the State flower of New South Wales, as a flourish on the website. The blooms and leaves parallel elements of the IAWBH logo with laurels around the globe, and are unmistakably Australian. you may be able to see some at the National Botanic garden while visiting Canberra.
